In numbers, Schaan is the largest community of our state with its approx. 5’600 inhabitants

The head of the community Hansjakob Falk has held this responsible office with adequate commitment and skill since 1991. In a personal conversation with him we have learnt a lot about Schaan; at this point, however, we can only give you a short overview. A personal visit to Schaan is really worthwhile!

Figuratively speaking, Schaan is the «centre of the country». Unfortunately, this not only brings about advantages: The heavy traffic surely is problem No. 1 in the village, especially in the centre. The directive planning «Streets in the Centre» includes a large roundabout to relief the crossroads «Lindenkreuzung». Parliament already approved of this concept and land purchasing negotiations are well on their way.
The central location, however, also brings about positive aspects: Schaan offers its inhabitants high quality of life and residence. Schaan is a major centre in the cultural domain due to the significant TaK, the Theatre at church place, which is renowned beyond the state borders, due to the adult training in the institute «House Stein-Egerta» and due to many other further education offers.
Industry, commerce and specialist shops are located in Schaan in great numbers. Schaan is known far and wide, also beyond state borders, as the seat of the international companies Hilti AG, Ivoclar-Vivadent and Hilcona AG and many others. But commerce is equally important: it has been and will remain one of Schaan’s important economic pillars.
Schaan offers its population a wealth of leisure amenities: in addition to the already mentioned institutions, there are approx. 40 clubs to join for activities. Schaan clubs have also produced international top athletes: as for example the judoka Ulrike Kaiser (who already won the gold medal in the Small State Games) or the athlete Stefan Kaufmann (he won the bronze medal in the Small State Games).
Spare time can be enjoyed easily in Schaan apart from that: either on the sports grounds «Rhine Meadow» (Rheinwiese), at the sports and leisure facilities Dux with the generally popular «Vita Course» (Vita-Parcours) and the tennis courts or on many other occasions.
The Community Centre Resch is surely important for the entire region: In addition to the Primary School, an exemplary spare time establishment with metal and woodworking studios, a pottery, a photo lab, course rooms and many others are housed in Resch. The local youth club «El Niño» with its extensive offer can probably be called unique. But also the younger ones are well taken care of: they are busy in separate courses and adventure weeks. Besides, the community of Schaan built an adventure playground in the area of the sports grounds Rheinwiese and a skating facility will be opening soon.
Together with the community of Vaduz, Schaan runs the generally known and popular public swimming pool Mühleholz and the youth hostel (which is operated by the Association of Swiss Youth Hostels). The crazy golf course which was built by the two communities is run by the crazy golf club.
Also otherwise, Schaan is a very central place: the animal protection club, the Office for Social Services, the Department for Sports, the Liechtenstein Gas Supply Company, the Liechtenstein Power Stations, the Chamber of Commerce and Economy and many other institutions have their seat in Schaan.
You will also find here regionally important events: the already traditional Arts and Crafts Market (which will take place on 17th November this year), the Lihga (which you can visit again in 2002), Schaan Carnival with its long parade, circus events and many other more take place in Schaan.
Schaan also exhibits international commitment: it is one of the founding members of the «Alliance in the Alps». This association encompasses over 130 communities from France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Germany, Slovenia and Liechtenstein.
So you can see: Schaan is a lovely place where life is worth living. Schaan’s oldest inhabitant can be quoted as an evidence for this: On 15th July 2002 Siegfried Süsskind celebrates his one hundredth birthday!

Just pay Schaan a visit!
