Prince Inheritor Alois was born in Zurich on 11th June 1968 as the oldest son of Prince Hans-Adam II. and Princess Marie von und zu Liechtenstein, and was baptized under the names Alois Philipp Maria.

The Prince received his names in memory of his great-grandfather, Prince Alois von Liechtenstein, the father of Prince Franz Josef II., who reigned at that time.
Prince Alois spent his youth at Vaduz Castle together with his parents, siblings and grandparents. Like his father, he attended the primary school in Vaduz-Ebenholz, and entered the Liechtenstein Gymnasium in 1979, from where he earned the A-level certificate (Type B, literary-historical school of thought) in the Spring of 1987. He subsequently entered the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst (Great Britain), where he graduated from officer training. After being commissioned as a Brevet Second Lieutenant, he served for half a year with the Coldstream Guards in Hong Kong and London. In October 1988 Prince Inheritor Alois enrolled as a student of jurisprudence at the University of Salzburg.
He completed this course of studies in the Spring of 1993 with a master’s degree. From September 1993 to May 1996 he was employed with an auditing company in London. Since that time he has resided in Vaduz, and is responsible for various sectors of the royal assets. According to the royal monarch constitution, Prince Inheritor Alois, as the oldest son of the sovereign, is designated to the succession of the throne. Therefore he has been prepared for his future duty as head of state since his early youth. He participates in political discussions and consultations with representatives of the government, and also assumes representative duties. He took the oath of allegiance to the constitution together with Prince Hans-Adam II. on the occasion of the tribute to hereditary succession on 15th August 1990. On 3th July 1993 Prince Inheritor Alois von und zu Liechtenstein married Duchess Sophie in Bavaria. They have four children - Prince Joseph Wenzel, born on 24th May 1995; Princess Marie Caroline, born on 17th October 1996; Prince Georg, born on 20th April 1999; and Prince Nikolaus, born on 6th December 2000.
