Mr. Vincenz John - a friendly municipal president, closely associated with the population by virtue of office and honour since 2001

Flums is sports and culture, countryside and farming, trade, industry. In a few words: Flums is the living area for people who count on quality of life. And this is merely a stone’s throw away from the agglomeration of Zurich and the gateway to the world.
4’988 people live in Flums on a municipal surface area of 75,3 km2. They go about earning a living, take care of the living area, retaining the legacy of their ancestors, and passing it onto their descend-ants. And they do it well. The municipal area ranges from 441 m up to 2’524 metres above sea level. This region is made accessible by a road network of about 160 km in length. It is a matter of course that the structure is not «humdrum» here. The intact nature and a very distinct, environment-conscious agricultural scheme are the foundations for the many sports and leisure activity opportunities which are available in Flums and the region in great variety. Naturally, this situation is perfect for tourism, which is an important pillar of our versatile economic structure. But progressive industrial businesses and innovative commercial enterprises also appreciate the strengths of the local economic zone, which is imbued with the supraregional and international perspectives to the industrial areas in the Rhine Valley, the Principality of Liechtenstein and Austria’s Vorarlberg province.
The bond between an extensive and attractive economic area as well as an intact and fascinating living zone is unique.
A prerequisite for good work is good education. In Flums, even the mountainous areas also have their own school houses. But the pride and joy of the Flums school system is the school area in the centre of the village. Here the primary school and the higher grades feature the most modern school facilities with continuously updated infrastructures. Public buildings and facilities in Flums are thor-oughly presentable. The old folks home, the fire department depot, the town hall, the multi-purpose facility with stage extension - everything new!
But there are also older features here. The St. Justus Church, the St. Laurentius Parish Church, the St. Jacob Chapel with the oldest glass portrait in Switzerland - the Madonna from Flums - the Gräpplang castle ruins, the Ritterburg («Knight’s Castle»), the Eisenherrenhaus («Iron Manor»), the Hansmelchenhaus, the Chett (village brook): All are witnesses to bygone times, and are persevering companions along the path into the future. They remind us of our origin, our culture - and that’s why they belong as a matter of course to our «luggage» along the path through the newly begun millennium.
Of course, one must not only work in Flums. Flums is fit for fun. Enthusiasts can ski quite well thanks to 65 km of downhill slopes and 17 mountain cable cars in the largest winter sports resort in East Switzerland. Snowboard? Absolutely! A snowboard funpark with boardercross and halfpipe are among the sports features. Or would you prefer something a bit more placid? Snowshoe tours and alpine ski tours invite visitors to discover nature. Crosscountry skiers find what they are looking for along 20 kilometres of Nordic trails. And there’s also 20 km of winter walking trails. Whoever is still not tired can indulge in the fun on the sledge run (naturally during the daytime as well). And in summer? Hang gliding, paragliding, mountain biking, fishing in mountain streams, fitness course, swimming in the indoor pool or in the nearby Walensee, hiking along the 100 kilometres of marked hiking trails... it will certainly never be boring.
And all of this is featured in a natural free time arena which is unique and incomparable. Who-ever finds it too «close» here still has further possibilities. Flums is right in the middle of «Heidi Land» with a huge range of leisure activities. Or, would you like to take part in a club activity? There are over 50 clubs in Flums. Football, shooting range (300 m pistols, crossbow - underground in the Hagerbach Shooting Centre), theatre plays, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics, Fasnacht (Carnival) society, music, ski club... decisions, decisions!
And this is all available in the immediate vicinity of the Zurich agglomeration and the airport. The «gateway to the world» is barely more than an hour’s drive away. Of course, Flums is also proud of the regional integration along with Sarganserland, Werdenberg, the Chur Rhine Valley and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Flums is right in the middle of it all!
