Montivation and enthusiasm for Schellenberg for over 16 years

The municipality of Schellenberg is Liechtenstein’s smallest municipality in terms of surface area.

The municipality of Schellenberg is the smallest municipality in the Principality of Liechtenstein in terms of surface area with 355 hectares, and has about 1’000 inhabitants. In addition to the extraordinarily scenic location at just shy of 700 metres above sea level, Schellenberg impresses visitors with its unique view of the surrounding Swiss, Austrian and Liechtenstein mountain ranges. With good weather conditions one also has visibil-ity extending as far as Lake Constance. Fantastic hiking trails as well as two well-managed inns offer hikers and visitors to Schellenberg a very special ambience, which invites guests to linger awhile.

A continuity of settlement can be verified as long ago as 3’000 B.C. on account of the secure altitude above the Rhine valley. Two fortress ruins, which were in possession of the Lords of Schellenberg from the southern German region, are located within the municipal boundaries. The feudal lords provided the names of the village and the former Schellenberg dynasty (and also identical with today’s lowland).

The St. Georg Chapel in the Hinterschellenberg municipal district essentially stems from the period around 1700, and was renovated in 1981. The modern parish church in the Mittelschellenberg municipal district was consecrated in 1963, and is today under historical protection on account of its architectural significance. Arranged in a cluster in front of the church are the parish hall with spacious premises for administration and clubs, the post office, and the village store as well as the primary school with its unique playground arrangement.

The centre of the village is also characterised by the Convent of the Sisters of Precious Blood (the core of which stems from 1860 – 73). The beginning of the independent rectory of Schellenberg is also connected with the «settlement» of the convent.

A camping space for boy scouts and youth groups with the necessary infrastructure could be realised on the grounds of the upper fortress in the framework of the 300-year-anniversary ceremonies. And so the municipality of Schellenberg offers youths from at home and abroad an ideal and convenient opportunity to spend their holidays in Liechtenstein.

Today Schellenberg is a modern village with a high quality of life and a modern, well-arranged infrastructure. In order to be able to get to know, appreciate and love Schellenberg and its environment, one has to treat themselves to a bit of time and piece of mind.

I sincerely welcome all of you to experience the special charm of Schellenberg.
