Municipality of Triesenberg
with Director Hubert Sele

The municipality of Triesenberg is a special part of Liechtenstein
and is unique in many areas

Triesenberg is not only the highestsituated township, but with 29,77 km2 it is also the largest in the Principality of Liechtenstein in terms of sheer municipal area. Yet not only these statistical attributes make Triesenberg so special. The ancestors of today’s 2’677 inhabitants are a special aspect. Triesenberg was settled by the «Walser», descendants of a Celtic tribe related to the Welsh, at the end of the 13th century. These «Free Walser» were the first to make Triesenberg arable. For this achievement they were vested for over 300 years with special rights of freedom by the sovereigns at that time.

Of course, today the Triesenberg citizens are on an equal footing with the rest of the national citizens, but even today one still encounters the spirit of the «Free Walser» and the retained Walser dialect in Triesenberg. The special history can be experienced firsthand in the Walser local heritage museum in the centre of Triesenberg.

But Triesenberg not only has a special past, but is also a bijou for those seeking recreation. Situated on a sunny slope, the municipal area ranging from 700 to 2’000 metres above sea level offers everything the heart desires. An extensive network of hiking trails and the splendid view into the Rhine Valley convey impressions that one does not forget so quickly. Behind the «Kulm» mountain crest lie the recreation and winter sports areas Malbun and Steg. A wonderfully intact nature combined with various entertainment possibilities!

In short: Whoever is in Liechtenstein and does not visit Triesenberg
is missing something.
