Municipality with heart in the upper Rhine Valley The municipality of Grabs offers abundant quality of life

Skirted by the magnificent backdrop of the Alvier range and the Alpstein, with a view of the Rhine Plain and the Three Sisters lying east of the national border, the village of Grabs is situated in the upper Rhine Valley, and is the largest municipality in the Werdenberg district in terms of surface area.
Grabs, characterised over the course of many years by embroidery and agriculture, is today in every respect a modern municipality with a solid infrastructure and a varied range of jobs in all economic sectors. Many incoming residents have discovered the village as an ideal living area, and the housing developments extend far out into the meliorated Rhine Plain. Irrespective of this rapid growth, the municipality has been able to retain a majority of its rural structures. Here everyone still knows and helps one another, and also attaches great importance to a functioning community in which every individual is also allowed to have a say. The extremely active village clubs contribute an influential share in this happy symbiosis between old and new. More than 100 clubs, public corporations and institutions characterise public life in Grabs.
The small town of Werdenberg with the picturesque Grafenschloss («count’s castle»), which belongs to the municipal area, is a gem of a special nature. The small town can be rightfully taken into account with regard to cultural heritage of a national standing. It is certainly one of the last medieval wooden structure settlements still maintained in original condition, and comprises a variety of secular building construction types in its arrangement. Block buildings, timber-framed houses and planked log buildings are interspersed in a very cramped area, while on the other hand they are followed by houses built in solid stone structure method. A veritable treasure trove for those interested in culture and history, and not the least a romantic place whose charm is hard to match in the region! In addition to the publicly accessible castle, the Schlangenhaus Regional Museum is also located in the small town. There the history of today’s Werdenberg district is vividly depicted.
Grabs features one of the most beautiful and most varied hiking and greenbelt recreation areas in the St. Gallen canton. Mountain streams with steep ravines, loosely scattered settlements with dreamy mountain grazing pastures set amidst jagged, forbidding crags - such as the Gämsler, the Grabser Hausberg or the Margelchopf - alternate with natural beauties like the picturesque Voralpsee and the alpine moor nature reserve at Gamperfin with its extremely varied alpine flora. Numerous sports and leisure activity facilities offer additional space for fitness, recreation and community activities.
However, Grabs is not only a residential area, but also an important place of work. Trade and commerce have banded together into a flourishing community of interests. Not only are numerous medium-sized businesses and retail stores represented in this community, but also construction businesses and wood processors along with their suppliers, automotive industries, computer technology - this list even extends to printing and labelling systems as well as mechanical engineering. Also included are numerous service companies, not the least.
