MELS

Municipality of Mels
with Municipal President Markus Zimmermann

As a village with an eventful past,
Mels shows that it is also a location with a future.

With a range of 140 km2 the political municipality of Mels is the largest municipality in terms of surface area in the St. Gallen Canton. With approximately 7’950 inhabitants it is at the same time the most populous municipality in the Sarganserland. It extends from the Rhine River via the Seez and Weisstannen Valleys up into the alpine regions nearly 3’000 metres above sea level. The dimensions of the landscape and variety offer ideal prerequisites for a varied development.

Not only nature, but also we humans are subject to a constant process of change in the change of seasons. Or expressed otherwise: Nothing is more consistent than change. The municipality of Mels changes its face from year to year. We are able to observe this most conspicuously in Riet: New shopping centres and new roads as well as new jobs have been created. An entire region has been reconfigured. Over the course of the decades the municipality has evolved from an originally typical farmer’s village into a town with industry, commerce and trade as well as service and administrative business operations.

Mels has quite a few strengths and special features to offer; for instance, the central traffic location, manifold keep-fit and sports possibilities in summer and winter in the immediate vicinity, easily accessible training and advanced vocational training institutions, varied shopping possibilities in the village and in the most modern shopping centres, lively traditions and cultural events as well as a manifold and active club life.
