The song was a prayer for King George II. with the text of the English hymn. Exact details about the emergence of the national anthem cannot be located in the archives. The composer was, as was often the case at that time, unknown. According to oral legend, a German clergyman by the name of «Jacob Josef Jauch» wrote the hymn. He was employed from 1852 to 1856 in Balzers as the morn-ing service pastor. The hymn is sung according to the melody of the English national anthem «God save the King», a composition by H. Carey. How-ever, the exact date from which the melody was sung as the official anthem in Liechtenstein cannot be proven with any certainty. After the First World War, there were the first attempts to alter the text of the national anthem - many more followed. The text - it originally encompassed five verses - was revised and shortened in 1963 by resolution of parliament.
